Uruguay had a big scare before progressing to a quarter-final clash with Boroughmuir.
Stew Mel shocked the overseas visitors with the opening try through Richard Borthwich, converted by Chris Bisset. The Uruguayans responded before the break when Jose Viana crossed for the score. The conversion from Martin Cervino tied the scores at half-time.
The visitors almost grabbed the lead early in the second period, but they were pulled back for a forward pass by referee, John Hogg.
Stew Mel immediately burst up field and Fraser Deeming scorched in from the half way line to score, but he conversion was wide.
A missed kick to touch handed the initiative to Uruguay, and Francisco Vilaboa burst over, and Viana added the conversion to the seal the win.
