Kelso 21, US Cougars 17
US Cougars became the first big-name casualties of the tournament when they crashed to a late try by Kelso.
The visitors from across the Atlantic got off to a good start with early tries from Dave Disorbo and David Fee, but both went unconverted.
Kelso hit back with a crucial try just before the break. Gordon Laing was on the end of a lot of pressure from the Borderers to score between the posts, and Bob Hogarth converted.
Kelso grabbed the lead early in the second half when Ross Ford stepped out of a couple of tackles to score. Hogarth again converted.
The Cougars responded with a try from Mala Delai, converted by Nelo Lui, to give the overseas the lead again.
However, Kelso had the final word with Iain Fairly breaking down the touchline to score at the corner, and Simon Manners converted.
