The first guest side to appear in the tournament, Stellenbosch University, got off to a flying start with Johann De Kock racing in after only eight seconds. Watsonians, winners at Gala last weekend, showed the South Africans did not overwhelm them, and Darren Burns finished off a superb move to tie the scores.

However, two quick tries from Kobus Meintjies and Wilhelm Koch put the overseas side into a comfortable lead at the interval.

An early second half score from Dwain Brown put Stellenbosch further ahead but an individual break and score by Andrew Turnbull gave Watsonians an outside chance.
That chance was extinguished when Braam Immelman took advantage of some poor handling from Watsonians, and Stellenbosch added to their lead with a second try from Meintjies
