Heriot’s went into a surprise early lead and gave Ponsonby some nervous moments, before the overseas team progressed comfortably.
Ian Wilson gave the Scots an early lead with Ian Stent converting. Before Gavin Williams hit back for the New Zealand visitors. Brett Williams conversion brought the Kiwis level with the conversion.
The same combination put Ponsonby ahead, Gavin Williams touching down and Brett Williams converting.
Jamie Thomson broke away for Heriots, but he was chased down by Gavin Williams metres short of the try line. The Edinburgh team, though, kept up the pressure and Rory Lawson went over. Stent tied the score with the conversion.
Clever play from Kane Hancy from a lineout inside the ’22 caught out Heriot’s as the Kiwi’s edged ahead.
Ponsonby made Heriot’s pay for defending deep in their own half when Matthew Part took advantage and Brett Williams again converted.
Heriot’s broke out to score through Jonathan Elliot, but Ponsonby’s Chay Raul restored his side’s lead seconds later.
A final score from Gavin Williams saw the Ponsonby player collect his hat-trick.
