MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Aberdeen GSFP 14 Stellenbosch University 31

Southern hemisphere outfit Stellenbosch University advanced to the quarter finals after beating a battling Aberdeen.

Rohan Steyl sprinted through to put the South Africans in front with Johan Pieterson converting.

Gordon Pangetti and Pieterson doubled Stellenbosch’s lead seconds later when Pangetti ran clear and Pieterson converted.

Aberdeen battled back with Rob Seib crossing to score and Kacey Mitchell, the former Greenyards player, kicking the conversion.

A pacy, powerful run from Wilhelm Koch took him past the Aberdeen defence to give Ponsonby their third with Pieterson again successful in front of the posts.

Pieterson stretched his team’s advantage when he dived in at the near corner, but Aberdeen refused to lie down as some clever play saw Tim Dinnen score and Mitchell convert.

Stellenbosch had the final word, though, Steyl racing through for his second of the tie.
