Ponsonby set up a semi-final meeting with the Scottish Thistles despite a brave challenge from Kelso.

Brett Williams dived over the in far corner after a powerful run to the line before seeing his conversion attempt fall short.

Kelso plied pressure deep in the Ponsonby ’22, but the Borderers failed to make the decisive breakthrough and Kiwis made them pay with a second score before the break from Chay Raui. Brett Williams added the conversion.

Matthew Pert stretched Ponsonby’s lead after breaking through a late challenge and Brett Williams added the two points.

Graeme Cowe collected the try Kelso deserved for their battling play and Murray Fleming converted.

Ponsonby, though, closed the tie when Gavin Williams scored and Brett Williams converted.
