Stellenbosch University 19 Boroughmuir 17
Stellenbosch University snatched a late winner in this physical tie to end the Scottish interest in the tournament. Johan Pietersons conversion of Rohan Steyl’s late score sent the South Africans through to a final meeting with Ponsonby.
There was an explosive start to this tie as both teams passed up opportunities to open the scoring before James Reilly battled over in the far corner as the Scots put the first points on the board.
A score from Pieterson just before the break brought the South Africans level.
Boroughmuir held their nerve to retake the lead when Ally Warnock found space to cross over, but Graeme Kiddie missed the conversion.
‘Muir kept up the pressure pinning the overseas side back in their own ’22 and increased their lead when Warnock raced through to touch down under the posts. Keddie added the conversion to stretch the gap to 12 points.
Stellenbosch hit back when Sarel Potgieter scored and Pieterson converted as the tie headed in the closing minutes.
The late score from Steyl drew the sides level and Pieterson’s conversion ended ‘Muir’s involvement at the semi-final stage.
