Dwaine Brown started the scoring for South African visitors and defending Melrose Sevens champions Stellenbosch University. A powerful break by Ernie Kruger took him beyond the Ayr defence to run in clear with Gio Aplon kicking both conversions.
Ayr kept the overseas team honest when they battled well for Murray Richardson to score before the break.

Brown got his second when he ran in unchallenged from the halfway line and Kruger claimed his brace minutes later. Rohan Steyl added both conversions.
Quintin Kruger then notched the South Africans fifth and final score of the tie, as Stellenbosch made a solid started to the defence of their title.
