Melrose Sevens veteran Matthew Pert put last years’ runners-up, Ponsonby, ahead, but Hawks hit back through Stuart Low. The Scots went in front when Cammy Little converted from close range.

David Smith restored the Kiwi’s lead when he went through under the posts and Paul Williams converted.

Quick handling from Smith and Kane Hancy gave Henry Lawson time to spot Williams in space for the latter to run into the corner.

Minutes later Smith’s handling was less secure when he nearly lost his grip on the ball as he went to touch down, but the referee gave the score as Ponsonby progressed to the next round.
