Stellenbosch 21, Ponsonby 12
In this rerun of the 2004 final, it was New Zealanders Ponsonby who sought revenge and they made a bright start. Early pressure brought reward when Henry Lawson worked an opportunity to cross from close range.
Dwain Brown brought Stellenbosch level with Graham Gant’s conversion taking the South African’s in front.
Ponsonby attempted to work the ball from inside their own ’22, but pressure from Stellenbosch forced them to concede possession and Gio Aplon capitalised to sneak through for the try. Gant converted to give his side a 14-5 lead.
The Kiwi’s struggled to find an adequate response and excellent support play saw Quentin Kruger add to his tournament total with both the try and conversion for Stellenbosch.
Lawson battled away from Ernie Kruger and Henoe Stoffberg to narrow the gap with Paul Williams converting. But there was to be no happy ending for Ponsonby as they once again failed to overcome Stellenbosch and the South Africans progressed to the final and a meeting with hosts Melrose.
