MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Hawick 22, Kelso 28

Kelso kicked off a wet and windy CALA 2005 Melrose Sevens taking an early advantage over Borders rivals Hawick. Graeme Cowe spotted a gap in the Greens defence to score between the posts before adding the conversion.

Hawick hit back quickly with Keith Hedley and then John Houston finding success on either wing.

Hawick built their lead to 15-7 at the break when Hedley put a clever chip over the Kelso line and then found Garry Law up in support for the latter to make the line.

Kelso narrowed the gap when Cowe held up the ball for Scott Newlands to power through before Cowe added the conversion.

The Greens hit back when Hedley got his second, but an interception from Kelso’s Ally Haig gave him a clear run to the Hawick line with Cowe converting to put a point between the sides in Hawick’s favour.

Kelso attempted to play the ball from in front of their own try line and were rewarded when clever handling sent Cowe over to clinch a second round meeting with Gala.
