MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Currie 7 The Shimlas 31

The South African outfit the Shimlas made a bright start to their challenge for the title of Melrose Sevens Champions.

A brace from JW Jonker, who crossed in the right hand corner before touching down between the posts, sandwiched a Dandre Gerber score. Jonker converted his second effort and Gerber his own try from in front of the posts

Scots team Currie provided some resistance when Ryan McBride fed Mike Ker for the try with Ker also adding the conversion as the Shimlas took a 19-7 lead into the interval.

Patient build up from the South Africans eventually created space for Leonard Krantz to jog in by the posts and Jonker added a tidy conversion. Krantz secured his second moments later when he pounced on a mistake by Currie, which left the ball loose as the Southern Hemisphere visitors guaranteed a quarter-final tie against Biggar.
