Heriots 31 Oxford University 26
It was Heriots who came out on top of the early exchanges in this final quarter-final tie.
Martin Nutt scored in the opening minute before James Thompson hit back for the Scots with a converted try.
Mark Simpson Daniel then added to his tally for the afternoon when a break at the halfway line enabled him to stroll across for the score. Kevin Brennan converted from in front of the posts to take Oxford ahead.
It was Heriots though who went into the interval ahead when a powerful break carried Cameron Bruce through and Thompson converted for a 14-12 lead.
The Edinburgh side built from the restart to send Apo Satala over in the corner, but when Tom Tombleson broke free the teams were brought level with Brennan’s clean conversion from in front of the posts.
No sooner had Scott Newlands put the Scots back ahead when Nutt raced through for his second of the tie and Brennan edged his side ahead with the conversion. Newlands, however, was not content to see his earlier effort go to waste and his second score, along with Thompson’s conversion, saw Heriots end Oxford’s participation in the 2006 tournament.
