MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Kelso 12 Hawick 17

A heavy shower greeted the arrival of Kelso and Hawick on to the Greenyards pitch in the third tie of the first round.

Hawick captain Keith Hedley lead by example when he kicked ahead and scored beside the posts in the opening minute of this tie.

Kevin Utterson brought Kelso level when he picked up and dashed over the try line. The rain turned to hail as Euan Ford knocked over the conversion to give Kelso a slight advantage at the break.

Kelso plied further pressure from the restart with Rory Hutton holding up play for Hawick just in front of his own line before Kelso created space on the right wing and Greg Minto crossed in the corner.

Hawick hit back when John Coutts chipped over the head of Graeme Cowe to collect and Hawick converted to draw level and take the tie into a period of extra time.

It was the Greens though, who ended the tie as they started it, when they worked the ball across the park and Greg Thompson squeezed in at the right hand corner.
