MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Ayr 12 Newcastle Falcons 39

Ayr got the better of the first guest sides to show, Newcastle Falcons, in the opening moments of this tie. AJ McFarlane putting his side ahead.

Falcons, though, stated their intentions with a quartet of tries before the interval. Cameroon Johnson’s was the pick of the bunch. Falcons gathered the ball just in front of their own line before feeding Johnson who made a comfortable run the length of the pitch. Even the attentions of Ayr’s Euan Kellar weren’t enough to prevent the score. Ollie Philips, Mark Laycock and Stuart Mackie added to the English visitors total.

Falcons continued after the break where they had left off. Philips crossed for his second with Andrew Skeen converting before Johnson also secured his brace.
Damien Kelly powered through to provide for Murray Richardson as Ayr attempted to claw Falcons in.

However, it was Falcons who had the final say in the tie when Tim Visser touched down and Laycock added the conversion to book a quarter-final berth against Watsonians.
