The Auld Enemy renewed their age-old acquaintance in the final of the 125th Mathon Melrose Sevens. In the blue corner were the Scottish Thistles, their first time back in the Melrose Sevens final since they were comprehensively beaten 38-7 by Boroughmuir in 2002. Leicester Tigers opened the scoring when a burst of pace from Ben Youngs took him through the Melrose line before he beat the last defender to score under the posts. Gregor Gillanders kicked the simple conversion. Ulster found themselves behind to the Scottish Thistles early on when Ally Warnock converted his own try from the sideline. Keith Earls held off a challenge from Ignacio Mieres to continue his try scoring habit, but the missed conversion kept the Scots in front.
