Kelso 19 Heriot’s 15
Kelso started brightly against last weeks’ winners of the Gala Sevens when Kevin Utterson broke through from close range. Heriot’s were made to battle hard to bring themselves level when O.J. Brown squeezed in at the corner. Kelso threatened again moments later when a deep run from Sean Common was well supported, but his pass inside to Greg Minto went forward. It was a costly error as Heriot’s regained possession and Colin Goodie ran the length of the pitch to score in the opposite corner and put his side ahead 10-5 going into the break. A great move from the Borderers levelled the tie. Michael Tait and Andrew Haig exchanged passes before a superb take by Haig took the great-great-grandson of Sevens founder Ned Haig scored by the posts. Moments later Richard Minto added to Kelso’s lead with Sean Common converting both tries. Heriot’s captain Peter Eccles scored a late consolation try, but it was the hard working Kelso side who progressed.
