MELROSE INTERNATIONAL RUGBY SEVENS

Jed Forest 20 Hawick 17

Jed-Forest were first to break the try line in this battle of the Borderers. Robert Ferguson squeezed over before a clever side step by Hawick’s John Coutts levelled the scores. Rory Hutton kicked the tricky conversion, but the Greens lost their lead moments later.
Ex-Scotland Sevens player Clark Laidlaw scored twice in a matter of minutes the second of which was set up by Roy McFarlane.
Donald Grieve extended Jed’s lead further in the second period when he scrambled across from close range. Laidlaw saw his conversion attempt rebound off the cross bar.
Hawick kept their heads up and pressed the Jed line before Coutts doubled his tally for the afternoon, but the conversion from close range was missed. A late counter from Greg Thomson narrowed the gap, but time had run out on Hawick as Jed set up a 2nd round tie against Chinese Agricultural University.
