Boroughmuir 12, Shimlas 17 (aet)
Shimlas made a strong start to the defence of their title when Shagan Windvogel crossed the try line in the opening minute of the final 2nd round tie versus Boroughmuir. The South Africans doubled their advantage when Ockie van Zyl set up Leonard Krantz who dived over before also kicking the conversion. ‘Muir got themselves off the mark when Angus Martyn beat Pieter Laubuschagne and then continued to take the game to their overseas opponents. The Scots hard work paid off when Greg Cotterell created the space for Calum Cusiter to cross between the posts. Elgan O’Donnell’s successful conversion levelled the scores at 12-12 and sent the tie into extra time. The Shimlas threatened first, but a forward pass cost them an almost certain score. ‘Muir made the Southern Hemisphere side work hard, but the Shimlas sealed their passage to a quarter-final tie against Melrose when Laubuschagne scrambled across in the left-hand corner.
